WIP’D IT! + A Polyester Yarn Question

And as mentioned last week, I finished all my WIPs in good time for this post, allow me! 😀

“Alicia” the purse is my own creation.  I combined two color crochet cotton yarns for it (beige and deep red), found the type of crochet flower I wanted on its flap via a google search, and learned how to make a tassel 🙂

I didn’t want to pick up a needle and thread for Alicia unless it’s just to hide the tails 🙄 So it is stitched together using a steel crochet hook and single crochet stitches that travel from one end of the purse, to its flap, then down the other end. The strap is likewise crochet-ed on starting at one end and attached at the other.

It’s a very handy cross-body purse for times when all I need to bring is my mobile, keys and a few folded up bills. Unfortunately, there’s only this one picture of Alicia since my friend liked it so much that I gave it to her 😮 That’s me being so happy the purse turned out so well XD Oh well, I can always make another one I guess …

So now it’s time to reward myself with more yarn, right?! 😀 😀 Well as I was about to fill another online order, I had a yen to first check what was available locally. We discovered this shop near a wet market that sold craft supplies and, guess what, they have these lovely polyester yarn! ❤ ❤ ❤

As any self-respecting yarn addict, I was about to go appropriately gaga and buy what I could carry, however, I’ve never worked with polyester yarn before. So I bought these three (only) and decided to meditate on them first. Now I’m looking at them and feeling them and waiting for them to speak to me.

So now I need your help –

What can you make with polyester yarn? I’m thinking doilies and bags and I don’t know, are they any good for scarves or any piece of clothing? Are they warm? They feel soft but strong, and smooth. There’s no specifications but I believe these work well with my 3mm hook.

  2. I would imagine you could make whatever out of it. Just like there’s polyester clothing you buy at stores, you can make it. But, you have to remember it’ll have the same vices. It’d be less likely to breathe, unlike wool or cotton. I would suggest you look at Ravelry, search for that yarn, and see what other people have made with it.
    (also, completely owning that the label on the left skein is making me super twitchy. “weigth” and “lenght”.”)

  3. I love the infinity shrug! That is so pretty and versatile. I had an idea for the polyester yarn for you…medium size bags-something to carry fresh fruits or vege’s in while at a local market.

    1. It is indeed. Thanks! 🙂 Doubling or trebling? Hmmm, no. But why? Will I be able to crochet certain items that way? Although I am fond of combining yarns so it was perhaps just a matter of time 🙂

  6. Congrats on all those finishes. Unfortunately, I can’t see your slideshow at the moment (probably because I have very poor internet so I’ll check back later) but I LOVE you bag. Those two yarns worked together give a lovely effect and the flower is beautiful and finishes it off perfectly. I’ve never tried crocheting with polyester, although I have knitted with it and found it quite similar to wool. I’ll be interested to hear what it’s like.

  8. Congrats on finishing all of your projects. You definitely needed to be treated to some new yarns. The shawl is very pretty and I love all the ways you showed to wear it. Great accessory! The purse is adorable and you are so sweet to gift it to a friend. I’m sure she is loving it. I have no doubt you will come up with something fabulous for the new yarns. The colors are so pretty and Springy 🙂

  11. I just love Alicia! It is just so darn cute! The color choice was great and the tassel just adds to the cuteness. Great Job. I bet it was hard to give away because it was of your own design. Yes, you become attached to them. It was probably also easy to give it away because someone else was so thrilled with your work and thought it beautiful enough to want it. It makes you feel proud and happy inside. 🙂

  15. Hi Pardjee, I ever read on a blog that someone made a granny square blanket project with this Polyando. It is a small diamater-yarn, isn’t it?

    1. Apa Kabar, Opat 😀 Yes, I think the yarn is more small diameter yarn than large. I’m crocheting a bag with it now as I learned polyester is good for bags 😀

        However, if you want to try local polyester to make another bag, I am suggesting to use “Poly Cherry”. It has bigger diameter than Polyando but still pliable. But the local online mostly has “Poly Apple” which I don’t like 😀

  18. I started making these wall hangings out of yarns. I always use cotton. And I always end up combing through them to fix their appearance. I didn’t know there is a polyester yarn. I think this would be better for those.

    1. Yes I think polyester yarn lends itself well to home decor crochet projects. Polyester is pliable but doesn’t stretch and shrink, so it holds its shape. I wouldn’t recommend it for potholders or anything that might come in contact with fire though as some polyesters are made of petroleum.
