It’s a mushroom! It’s a bucket! It’s a skirt?! 😲 😲 😲

“I don’t want a mushroom on my head!”, so cries my alarmed daughter when I asked her to try on the hat I was crocheting.

Months ago I bought a crochet book that also has projects you can test your newfound skills on. One of the projects is a slouchy hat which promised the following skill builders – an interesting cluster stitch to create both drape and style, make and shape simple crochet ribbing, shape for slouch, work hat from the bottom up and, finish the top of the hat by gathering the fabric.

I also have this strawberry colored acrylic yarn that I didn’t know what to do with because, although the color is lovely, I suspect it is low quality acrylic. It’s rough to the touch. I bought it some time ago in Singapore for several bats of my eyelashes and never worked with it because I was ambivalent about its scratchy feel.

So anyways, I combined the two (project and lo-qual yarn) and gave the slouchy hat a go.

Now go get a cuppa and enjoy a good chuckle over some photos 😀

For the life of me I just could not figure out how to balance drape and shape – I tried 4 times, adding/subtracting rows/shells. I just couldn’t get it right!

So now the yarn is even more ragged than ever. I might just have to throw the silly thing away for my peace of mind! 😲

Well at least my daughter liked the fingerless gloves I made for her ❤ These go with the hat I made for her a while back.

Silver lining: I learned a new stitch, learned about ribbing, learned a little about decreasing and increasing, and am a bit smarter about yarn quality 😀 😀

  1. if it is acrylic, try adding vinegar to your load when you wash it (never on hot, either to wash or dry, because acrylic can melt). It might help soften the fabric some.
    Personally, I kinda like the hat, but then I’m one who prefers the slouchy kinds 😉

    1. Thank you! 😀 I already unraveled it out of frustration. But now I’m getting comments that it’s actually nice … oooppps! Next time before I unravel I should ask if anybody wants it and I can send it over to them 😀

  3. I think the hat looked great until the gathering part. I don’t like the method of gathering too many stitches into the top of a hat, preferring to decrease for a nice head-shaped curve. The stitch pattern and the colour are very nice.

    1. Yeah, I think the gathering might’ve worked better with softer or finer yarn so you get smaller folds and it doesn’t end up so bulky. I’ll try regular decreasing next time.

  7. I found a wonderful tip about softening up scratchy Acrylic yarns. Hand wash the finished item with hair shampoo rinse it well. Then rub in some hair conditioner, set it in a bowl of cool water to soak over night. Rinse it well and ring out excess water. You can lay it flat to air dry or dry it half way in the clothes dryer, then lay it out to air dry the rest of the way. I did this with a slouchy beanie I made for my daughter. It worked really well and it smells nice for a long while. 😀

      1. You are welcome. I unraveled a hat once too. It seemed like I would use a whole 10 ounce skein for one hat. My hats usually at the most used 4 ounce. I thought that was just too much for one hat. was not happy with it so unravel it I did. 🙂

  9. I thought the slouchy hat looked great too, And I haven’t even found my crochet hook and yarn to teach myself any crocheting yet this week, I put it down to my husband decorating the guestroom, too much mess around for me to concentrate.

  10. Cute project, but your daughter does look a bit lost in it….Have you tried Amagurumi yet? Those cute Japanese animals? Kids and even adults love them. They make a nice gift, or gift addition. You can even easily send them by mail, so they work well for overseas gifts as well.

  12. I recently was gifted of a crochet beanie. I didn’t think I would like it, but it is pretty cool. Not so great for really cold days, but not bad for chilly.
    I thought it looked a bit rastafarian at first, but it fits really well. I guess you never know…

      I did unravel the hat altogether though. But this morning I woke up with visions of new hats I could try using the unraveled strawberry yarn so, I guess the fight is still on 😉
