Another “Mad-Woman” Attempt In Beginner Knitting

So if any of you out there are wondering why I’ve been posting so infrequently now it’s because I’m working on “Adam”.

Adam is a sweater for my husband and – get this – I’m knitting it using those snakelike implements of torment called circulars that I swear had a mind of their own at the start of this project 😫 😫

I say this because I could not, for the life of me, properly cast on using them! After so many attempts (and running out of colorful expletives) I finally decided to just cast on using regular straight needles, and take over with the circulars from the second row onwards.

This worked by the way. So far so good. 😥😥

So now this is also a raglan sweater that is knit from the bottom to top. I am now at the yoke portion and I’m seeing gaps in my raglan decreases that I am getting vexed about 😒 😒

But I think I’ll just fix it up later on when I’m seaming the underarms 😐😐

And then there were the sleeves.

Somehow the idea of “magic loop knitting” came into my consciousness and at first I was very glad to have discovered a technique that would make it unnecessary for me to buy another set of circulars with shorter diameter.

Glad that is, until I tried it myself! 😱😱

Then I threw another batch of fresh colorful expletives all over the place and almost got a pair of scissors to just cut the whole thing to pieces! 😤😤

Fortunately I didn’t.  And since I have to buy any knitting supplies abroad (or online), I just decided to knit the sleeves with the straight needles and will just seam them using the mattress stitch later on.

(Inhale. Exhale. Repeat 3X)

Oh and, you do know that Adam is but my second knitting project ever, don’t you? (Well now you do!) I just feel that you should know this. This is very important (nods head vigorously).

So here’s Adam so far and, I guess the point of this blogpost is just to tell you that I’m still alive and somehow sane 😄😄😄

  1. it’s looking great to me. Don’t give up. Keep trying. I’m by no means a novice anymore and it took me ages to conquer in the round, never mind magic loop. You’ll get there. Search videos, pictures, see if anyone local (knitting group? Might get you out of the house, as well) can help?

  3. One of the many things I am supposed to do while home is learn to crochet more than a long thin string. I have the hooks next to me. If it was only as easy for me as reading..or digging…or giggling! You have done well and the color is GREAT!

  6. You’re so adventurous! This is fantastic for a second-ever project! Be patient with yourself on learning new knitting skills and kudos for going to a back-up plan for the sleeves – I’m positive that will work just as well as knitting them in the round using magic loop. Those gaps in your raglan decreases may become less noticeable or even disappear after you wash and block the sweater; small gaps and mistakes often “block out.” Keep going! You’re doing really well!!!

  11. That sweater looks great so far! I know what you mean about magic loop knitting. I don’t do it enough to remember so always have to look it up. However it does work.

    with the ol’ snake-like implements of torment with a mind of their own!
    My very first project was a pullover (for myself), but on straights…
    Then came DPNs. These days, circulars are my needle of choice.

  15. Raglan just looks a little odd when you’re still making it. Don’t worry too much about the gaps, they’ll sort themselves out. I’m still working on my first sweater (after… 17 years of knitting? Almost 18 now) and it’s a cable-knit monstrosity that cause my hands to ache after a few hours. Thankfully the cable part is done, and I just need to make the rest of the final sleeve and the collar. And get more yarn. That’s important, too. Don’t want a red collar on an off-white sweater, do we?

    1. LOL! XD Cables look daunting indeed but the only way to learn and improve is to do them so … lead boldly ahead so I might follow sometime soon 😉 ❤

  16. Thanks for the fun post. To me, knitting a garment is like walking across a landscape you’ve only seen on a map. When you’re actually ‘there’, there are bumps and diversions that weren’t on the paper. Good for you for sticking with it and for adapting to keep up with the pattern. For me, that’s the fun part of knitting!
